Traditional metal braces work well for some people. They aren’t the best option for everyone though. For those who would feel self-conscious about wearing traditional braces or who have a customer- or public-facing job, clear braces offer a more subtle, yet still effective alternative. Clear braces are only subtle if you can keep them looking clear though. So what should you do to accomplish that?
Avoid Food and Drinks That Stain
The easiest way to keep clear braces looking clear is to avoid things that stain them in the first place. Common braces-staining culprits include tea, coffee, hot chocolate, dark or colored sodas, curry (and anything else with turmeric in it), and red foods like wine, berries, tomato paste, and red candies (or anything else with artificial red coloring). While eating some of these things every once in a while may not stain your clear braces, it’s best to avoid them as much as possible. If you do indulge, rinse immediately afterward and clean your braces thoroughly.
Clean the Braces Regularly
Cleaning your clear braces regularly is another key to keeping them looking clear regardless of what you eat or drink. Best practices suggest brushing 30 minutes after every meal and before going to bed. That 30-minute window allows your saliva to wash away acids from your food before you brush. By brushing after every meal, you avoid letting food particles sit in your braces (which could cause discoloration) and around your teeth (which could lead to tooth decay). Remember to floss at least once a day as well, getting under the archwire to do a thorough job.
Be Smart about Stain Removal
But what if your clear braces start looking stained? Use alcohol-free mouthwash to break up most stains by gargling it three times a day and holding it in your mouth for two minutes each time. You could also try applying a little sodium bicarbonate (aka baking soda) to your toothbrush and gently brushing with it. Whatever you do, don’t reach for citric acid, lemon juice, or any other type of acid. They may remove stains, but they’ll also eat your enamel.
Keeping clear braces looking clear can be easier said than done, but for those who need a more subtle way to straighten their teeth, the extra effort is well worth it.
